Kalos was developed on core principles found in gymnastics, martial arts and yoga.
“In Greek Kalos is a term used to describe qualities of great beauty and nobility. It is also the root of the word calisthenics. We chose this as our company name to reflect our love of philosophy and commitment to high performance in every arena”
Our Origins
Kalos was created out of pain and necessity. In 2016 while working as a strategy consultant and training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I sustained a rupture of the radial collateral ligament (RCL) in my left elbow. All the orthopedic surgeons who examined me and my MRI results said that surgery will not guarantee recovery and suggested that the safest route was to quit training to avoid aggravating my condition.
I spent the next 7 months getting multiple cortisone injections and bouncing between physical therapists, acupuncturists and conditioning coaches, only to end up exactly where I started. The pain in my arm was a constant companion and simple tasks like carrying a laptop were close to impossible. After coming to terms with the fact that nothing was helping me, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I needed to find a way to cure myself all while working a demanding job that did not leave me with much free time.
I began doing my own research. I studied conditioning protocols used by Soviet wrestlers, some of which are still widely implemented across the Caucasus. I read about the routines used by old time strongmen like Eugene Sandow and Arthur Saxon. I looked at the training used by Masahiko Kimura and other traditional judoka. Lastly, I studied the way gymnasts developed the foundational skills needed for their advanced routines. Combining this with my experiences from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I designed my own training and recovery protocol.
A month after starting, my pain was gone and I was back to full strength.
Two months after that, I was able to perform complex movements like muscle-ups, one arm push-ups and front levers, all while my body fat percentage dropped to low single digits. I was able to accomplish all of this while training less than before and without following a strict diet.
Seeing my unconventional method and quick results led to questions from my friends and training partners. Shortly after, individuals in my extended network began reaching out with inquiries and requests for help. Before long, I began consulting for clients who came to me as referrals. I spent the subsequent years experimenting with, refining and codifying my system to meet the growing demand.
Now Kalos exists as a performance consultancy that aims to question and challenge the conventional training paradigms that we have come to accept as gospel. We use our underlying philosophy and proprietary methodology to focus on what is most useful for our clients, while cutting through the noise and stale practices that clutter the industry. We approach each case as an individual project and aim to give our clients the necessary knowledge and understanding of our method, so that they may continue to perform at the highest level for as long as they choose.
Our hope is to help as many as we can.
